It's like every few months, something comes along and gives her an inadvertent vacation. Frankly, she'd rather work six days a week, fourteen hours a day, rather than have any more of the 'vacations' she's been getting.
Of course, now she HAS to work those hours in order to get anything done. COFFEE TIEM IS ALWAYZ.
First, the pub. The pub was slowly but surely getting further and further away from the Nexus, up to and including several of the portals just softly and silently vanishing away. There were still several around, but nowhere on the scale of when the place first opened. This is probably for the best, really, since it allows her 'normal' guests to enjoy their gin and tonics without fear of further Nazis. Unfortunately, this also left her gross receipts short. She didn't even know who still worked at the place, anymore. Ian, god bless his Irish heart, had looked sadly at her upon her return, smiled a bit, and asked no questions. He'd just presented the books to her, gave her a half-hearted hug, and went back to the bar. He'd hired on more people, without her say-so, and they were doing just fine. Thorn still seemed to be handling the supply runs, though, so that cut down her overhead considerably.
Second, the flats. There was only one truly damaged apartment; Rimmer's. Instead of complaining endlessly to her, though, he'd simply noticed that there was a second-story two bedroom available, and took it without asking. Rather than argue with him, she just let it go. Everything else seemed to be liveable, at least, although a lot of work still had to be done.
Third, her translations of the Los Illuminados texts. She sighed, made a few notes, and then put it aside in favor of other problems.
Like the fact that she felt almost crippled without her PINpoint.
Since her return, she'd not touched a PIN, she'd even avoided the machine in the Nexus. But now, she needed to get her finances back in order, and that required that she go to the empty world and get her mining 'bots working. The scutters were sitting on the Dwarf, after all. Might as well use 'em. And perhaps hire other people, strong people, smart people, to help her out.
Not too many, though. This wasn't her charity house anymore. She couldn't afford to be as casually generous as she was before. She even debated making people in her building pay rent. She debated robbing a bank, too, but, hey, there were some things she just wouldn't do.
A woman's work is never done. Although now she'd welcome some time spent washing floors or something.
Finally, finally, she broke down, got herself a new PINpoint. It was only a matter of minutes to get all her old coordinates back from the master list that Eiko kept, including all her old 'anchor points' in Spain, her safe points on the Dwarf, the Prince Estate...school!, Theoi and all the others.
Only instead of heading right to the empty world, she sat on the edge of her bed and stared at the shiny, new black watch. No characteristic scratches, no worn wristband, the buttons slightly smaller, the face bigger and easier to read. Not her PINpoint.
She didn't want to use it.
No, not entirely true. She DID want to use it, she just didn't want it to go horribly wrong again.
Feeling entirely crippled, like she did when she got out of cold storage, she sighed, pushed a few buttons, and let the PINpoint lead her to the portal to the empty world that was in the Nexus proper. It was far, far away, hidden well, and it took her about an hour to walk to.
This might go on for a while.
